Aliya Al Mughairi, Class of 2020

As a TAISM alumni, I am grateful to have been a part of an incredible community who shaped the person I have become today. The best thing about TAISM is that you are not restricted; rather, you are encouraged to explore opportunities and dig deep into your interests. When I first joined in 2014, I instantly felt supported by many teachers and coaches to discover my passions in arts and sports, especially in Track and Field.

The welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging environment is what brought me to return to TAISM after university (University of East Anglia - BA Society, Culture, and Media). For the 2024-2025 academic year, I have assisted in coaching volleyball for the Middle School and JV teams, as well as high jump for the MS/HS track and field team. Additionally, I was a teacher’s assistant in Middle School, and I enjoyed building connections with the students, hoping that I could leave a similar impact on them as my teachers did when I was their age.

The highlight of this experience was officiating the high jump event at SAISA Track and Field, which was hosted at TAISM this year. The nostalgic atmosphere brought back many memories of my high school years, and it felt surreal to be back at SAISA as a coach and official. The cherry on top was TAISM securing first place, which reminded me of one of my most cherished memories: when TAISM won for the first time in 2020 - my senior year - by the smallest of margins: 2/3rds of a point! The little moments at TAISM, as a student and a coach, cannot be replaced, and will always hold a special place in my heart.

However, the most important lesson that TAISM taught me is to not limit myself to one path. Now that I have graduated university, I am grateful to have embarked on multiple journeys and explored a variety of opportunities outside of the school. I have created a platform to share my creative projects, spanning from visual and fine arts to videography. I am an advocate for women in sports, and have continued to focus on my sports career, reaching new heights with the Oman national athletics team and improving my national record in high jump! I have freelanced as a communications specialist and content creator, and have worked with clients and companies on both a local and global level. I have taken any opportunity to travel, whether it’s for pleasure, work, or sports, and continue to enjoy learning about different histories and cultures. My next endeavour will be at Strabag Oman, where I will be working as a junior communications officer.

My advice to students at TAISM is to take advantage of the time you have at school. Learn more about yourself and others, and don’t limit yourself to one thing. Take that chance, grab all the opportunities you can, and say yes to everything! TAISM offers something for everyone, and you never know, you may discover your passions from where you least expect it.
