In celebration of the 20th anniversary of The American International School of Muscat (TAISM) opening its doors to students in the Sultanate of Oman, a song was commissioned with composer Kyle Pederson which premiered at the 16th annual TAISM Festival of Choirs. Entitled Hands Are Knocking,  the song was born on the Bosch Center for the Performing Arts stage with a  150-voice chorus of over 40 nationalities in the spring of 2018. Last weekend around forty brass students from three international schools in the capital attended a Big Brass weekend at The American School to develop their instrumental skills. The budding wind players were taught by twelve of Muscat’s best brass players and teachers in a series of intensive workshops over two days. Beginning this school year TAISM will be recycling plastic bottles and shreddable paper. Collection bins are throughout the building, and there are large collection containers located near the carpark Exit 3, in the parking area after entering Gate 4 (Church side). At the end of each school day, the OIG custodians will be emptying the school bins and placing the plastic and paper recyclable materials in large recycling containers that are located in the parking lot (entering through Gate 4)... We are proud of each of the forty-eight students in TAISM’s Class of 2019 who received their High School diploma this year. May is World Down Syndrome Awareness month, and here in Oman there is a need for national awareness as a surprising one in 400 babies are born with the condition. The international average is one in a thousand live births. The prevalence of Down Syndrome in the Sultanate has received increasing publicity in recent years, with articles about successful entrepreneurs, horse riding outings, activity days and art competitions for youngsters living with Down’s Syndrome. TAISM students got to work with the environmentalist Harald Reichenbach as part of our many activities on Earth Day. They collected garbage and pressed it into sculptures called G-Cubes. TAISM hosted John Coy as an author visit for the elementary students. Our EC to grade three students came to the library on Monday to meet with an author who has published 17 books and is working on 6 more. Mr. Coy presented to students the steps and challenges to becoming a published author using examples from his first book Night Driving.
