On April 22, 2024, TAISM hosted its second annual United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit. Each of our ninth grade students spoke on the Bosch stage or in the Lobby in front of an audience of their parents, peers, teachers, and other community members about real problems we face and possible solutions. The Summit began with a keynote address by Mr. Ajwad Al Maskari, Programme Analyst for Youth and Communication at the United Nations Population Fund - GCC Sub-Regional Office.
This project began many years ago when high school social studies, science, and English teachers wanted to create an interdisciplinary project for students to bring together their skills and knowledge from different classes. Over the years the project has grown and evolved to become a defining learning experience for all grade nine students.
This year’s 42 ninth graders began the process of learning about the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals in February. Over a two-month period, each one chose a problem facing our community, researched the issue, and proposed a solution to affect meaningful change. Many of our students took steps to implement their solution and were rewarded with seeing the impact of their actions. They taught younger students about ocean acidification; created campaigns to increase recycling and decrease food waste at TAISM; mitigated their family's carbon footprint by implementing conscious changes at home; made recommendations for a more sustainable school building as part of our new construction project; and so much more.
We are so proud of their efforts and eager to see these contributing community members be the force of change to make our world a better place.
