My Experience at the ECIS Physical Education Conference

In February, the ECIS Physical Education Conference took place at ACS International School in Doha, Qatar. This annual event with its forward-thinking focus on movement, physical education and student well-being was an inspiring experience. The theme this year, “Moving Into the Future,” was all about expanding the idea of Lifelong Activity and exploring how physical education can evolve to meet the diverse needs of learners in an ever-changing world.
The conference delved into key future trends in physical education like Activity for Life, the integration of AI in PE, addressing Mental Health in PE and embracing Tech-Integrated Fitness. It also touched on Holistic Health Education, teaching Life Skills and fostering Leadership through physical activity. These topics were eye-opening and relevant for all of us, as the goal is to create an inclusive, dynamic and equitable PE environment that supports not just the physical but also the mental and emotional well-being of all students.
One of the things that makes this conference special is that most sessions are led by PE teachers from international schools, meaning everyone is learning from each other. The opportunity to connect with other educators and explore best practices for students in different schools is invaluable. This year, Dr. Aaron Beighle, a professor at the University of Kentucky, shared insights on how to shape the future of physical education and better support students.
Presenting at the conference is always a highlight. It’s a chance to reflect on personal learning, develop a presentation and share it with a community of passionate, caring teachers. Presenting to this group is incredibly rewarding because there’s a shared commitment to improving student outcomes through physical education. Giving back by sharing knowledge and experiences is fulfilling.
This year also provided the opportunity to get involved with the planning team for the conference. Working with five other PE teachers from around the world was a fantastic experience. Collaborating with the whole school in Doha made the event even more meaningful. This will be a process to look forward to in the future.
The biggest takeaway from the conference was the wealth of ideas, teaching philosophies and new perspectives that can be brought back to TAISM. From lesson ideas to leadership approaches and innovative uses of tech in PE, the knowledge gained from these conferences is always valuable. The energy and motivation from these experiences last for months, and it’s exciting to bring these fresh perspectives to students.
TAISM’s commitment to promoting professional development within its exceptional team of educators is something that stands out. With a strong focus on lifelong learning, the school provides opportunities for growth and learning alongside talented colleagues. This support ensures that everyone can continue evolving and providing the best for students.
