TAISM’s annual Terry Fox Run is more than a fundraiser. In addition to the run itself, where our community comes together to support cancer research here in Oman, the two week lead-up to the event embodies our school's values of contributing to the community, collaboration, and risk-taking. During these two weeks of our school year, everyone joins together – students, staff, and parents – to give back to our wonderful host country, supporting a cause that affects us all.
This year, our theme was 'Dear Terry.' When young cancer survivor Terry Fox ran across Canada on a prosthetic leg to raise money for cancer research, he captured the hearts of all Canadians. When his cancer came back and he had to stop his Marathon of Hope, Terry and his family received thousands of letters starting with the words "Dear Terry", expressing their appreciation for his courage. Our efforts echoed the gratitude we feel at TAISM, for Terry’s efforts, and for the hard work of cancer researchers right here in Oman, including Dr Sirin Adham and her team at Sultan Qaboos University, to whom we donate our fundraising Rials.
One of the most special parts of our Terry Fox campaign is the spirit of connection it fosters. Students pair up with buddies from different grades, forming friendships that go beyond the classroom. Students in each division have opportunities to become leaders and volunteers, empowering them to make a positive impact in the world.
This year, our students took their commitment to fundraising to new heights. The 5th-grade ambassadors led a cafeteria fundraiser, while the middle school students designed and sold stickers. The high school student council organized a head shave and a "Hoops for Terry" fundraiser, showcasing their creativity and dedication.
In addition to these efforts, students of all ages played a crucial role in spreading awareness and excitement for the event. One of our grade 2 class wrote and performed a song at the all-school kick-off assembly. Students helped film promotional videos, and a group of middle school mini course students even had the opportunity to have a Zoom meeting with the head of International Runs from the Terry Fox Foundation.
Dr. Sirin and some of her researchers joined us at the run. As we ran around the TAISM campus and enjoyed the post-run popsicles, there was a sense of togetherness and gratitude. In that moment, our school community felt like a family, united in honoring Terry's memory and supporting cancer research right here in Oman.
This year, our efforts raised 4963 Omani Rials for Dr Sirin’s study in the spirit of gratitude and compassion Terry embodied. Thank you, Terry, for inspiring us to make a difference.
With gratitude, The TAISM Community
