TAISM Students Participate at SAISA Tournaments

May 02, 2018

Boys Basketball

TAISM served as the host school for the 2018 South Asia Inter-School Association (SAISA) High School Boys Basketball Tournament in April.  The gyms were filled with excitement all weekend and TAISM’s team really thrived behind the support of the home crowd.

TAISM was 3-1 in pool play defeating Lahore American School 61-11, ISOIC/MCS 54-13, and American School of Bombay 52-37.  Our lone loss in pool play came in a hard fought game to Lincoln School 47-55. Based upon the results of pool play we were matched up against  American International School of Dhaka in the quarterfinals. The team gave everything they had and competed extremely hard but went to the eventual tournament champions, American International School of Dhaka 30-50. The loss was hard to take because it meant our goal of winning the championship was no longer attainable. The boys showed resilience and amazing perseverance by regrouping and bouncing back with two more wins over Overseas School of Colombo 59-32 and Lincoln School 57-50. TAISM finished the tournament with a 5-2 record and 5th place finish.

Girls Soccer

The TAISM Girls Football team was on a mission to repeat as SAISA champions from their first day of practice this year. Although the regular season saw few opportunities for the girls to play, they looked great in every match and were undefeated, including two victories against rivals at British School Muscat. The girls continued to stay focused at training and worked hard to prepare themselves for SAISA. The hard work paid off as TAISM went undefeated at the SAISA tournament held in Colombo, Sri Lanka capturing their second consecutive SAISA championship.  In spite of relentless heat and strong opponents, TAISM continued to battle until the final whistle of the championship game.

The entire tournament saw great play by TAISM.  Day 1 of the tournament pitted us against Karachi American School. The game was played on a huge pitch (105 X 78 meters) and the ladies played beautiful football resulting in a 4-0 victory. Their second game was against Colombo International School and resulted in another 4-0 victory. On Day 2, our first match was against American Community School, Amman. Although our girls gave up their first goal of the tournament, they still cruised to a comfortable 5-1 victory. Their match against American School of Bombay (ASB) proved to be much more difficult. Although our defense secured another shutout, ASB was tough on defense as well and allowed only one goal in a narrow victory for TAISM. Day 3 began with semifinal match against a pumped up The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC), the host school. TAISM started off strong and was able to score 3 goals in a matter of 10 minutes. Ultimately, TAISM came out on top with a final score of 5-2. In the final, TAISM had to face the only other undefeated team, American International School Dhaka (AISD). TAISM took the lead after a wonder strike by our star forward, Debby Esho. With her back to the goal and 20 meters away, Debby swiveled on a half volley and buried the ball into the upper corner. AISD  was able to draw even in the second half with a goal off a corner kick. TAISM remained resolute. In the final minutes of the game, a long punt from super keeper, Debra Effiong, set Debby off racing towards the goal. Debby drove the ball into the back of the net to secure the championship. All 16 TAISM players contributed immensely and were inspired by the amazing work ethic and leadership of our senior co-captains, Serena Lee and Georgia Griffin. Coach Brink and Coach Dani were amazed by the skill and determination shown by everyone on the team, and are so proud of all the girls.

Track and Field

The TAISM track and field athletes entered the SAISA weekend with positive mindsets and a burning desire to compete with heart. The first day of competition in Amman, Jordan saw our athletes run, jump and throw to top finishes and SAISA records. In the cooler temperatures, our TAISM Eagles were flyin’!  After day 1, our combined team score ranked us second.

Day 2 was highlighted by personal bests and strong effort, yet we experienced our fair share of disappointment as well. Although still in second place overall, our margin was slipping away to the other teams in the hunt.   On the final day of the SAISA meet, with many TAISM athletes qualifying for the sprint, jump and throwing finals and a fast and competitive 4x100m relay event, we were in position to make a run for the title of SAISA champions.  Throughout the day, we competed to the best of our ability, supported one another and finished the meet having become a true track and field team with smiles and excitement. With the final results tallied, the TAISM track and field team was awarded second place overall.  With our trophies, medals and ribbons packed safely in our luggage we celebrated our new friendships, accomplishments and successful season with a float in the Dead Sea.
