High School Winter SAISA Sports

February 12, 2017

The weekend of February 2-4, 2017 was a busy time for 38 High School athletes and their four coaches as TAISM students participated in the South Asia InterSchool Association (SAISA) tournaments.  The Varsity (Blue Team) and Junior Varsity (Red Team) Girls’ Basketball teams traveled to the American School Bombay, in Mumbai, India, and the Boys’ Soccer team traveled to the American International School Chennai, India.

In the Girls’ Basketball tournament, the coaches and players were put to the test immediately on day 1.  TAISM’s Red team (Junior Varsity), had a big hill to climb and they did it with gusto and grit.  Knowing they were outmatched against other varsity teams. they competed at a very high level and never gave up.  They learned a lot about basketball and what it means to compete in a SAISA event. The TAISM Blue team (Varsity) fought hard for a 2nd place ranking in their pool. They defeated Chennai in the quarter final, lost to the host school ASB in the semifinal and were then pitted against Lincoln School of Nepal for the 3rd place trophy.  Both teams fought hard but in the end Lincoln prevailed.   Both TAISM teams put in their best effort, had lots of fun, and took care of each other throughout the tournament.

The Boys’ Soccer team went into the Chennai tournament with only five returning players from last year’s team.  Their efforts to come together as a team showed in their fine performances.  The boys finished second in their pool after winning two and drawing on one game. That set them up for the semifinal against Dhaka.  After a very close match in which both teams played great soccer, Dhaka ultimately came away with the victory. They then faced Lincoln School for third place.  After falling behind early in the second half, our team rallied right and scored two goals with only minutes to spare, coming away with the win.

Four TAISM boys from this season’s Junior Varsity team also traveled to Chennai as they were invited to play on an additional team made up of boys from other SAISA schools.  This was a great way for these players to get the experience in a tournament.

TAISM is fortunate to belong to the SAISA league, which brings American international schools in our region together for sporting events.  Additionally, our students learn many important life skills from our exceptional coaches and unforgettable new experiences traveling abroad to compete.
