TAISM Students Participate in AMIS Honor Choir

February 29, 2016

You hear that?  That’s the sound of the world. That’s the sound of an international choir.” - Dr. Doreen Rao, 2016 AMIS Mixed Choir Conductor

Eight TAISM singers returned home from an amazing experience at the Association for Music in International Schools (AMIS) High School Honor Mixed Choir hosted by the International School of Luxembourg. Over 300 additional singers and chaperones were added to their campus rhythm during two school days, and it has seemed to go on without a flaw. Our Great 8 certainly represented TAISM with a high degree preparation and confidence, applying their proficient choral music concepts, graciousness, and grit. As I watched them absorb the experience, I also witnessed their leadership arrive at a new level of dedication and resilience.

Congratulations to:

  • Shaikha Al Wahaibi (grade 12, Soprano, 2nd year in Honor Choir)
  • Ethan Brink (grade 10, bass, 2nd year in Honor Choir)
  • Elsa Buck (grade 10, Soprano, 2nd year in Honor Choir)
  • Sebastian Delgado (grade 12, Bass, 4th year in Honor Choir)
  • Raj Hamlai (grade 9, Tenor, 1st year in Honor Choir)
  • Juan Lopera (grade 10, Tenor, 1st year in Honor Choir)
  • Igat Matthew (grade 12, Bass, 1st year in Honor Choir)

The highlight of the event was when composer, Paul Ayers was present for a question and answer session about the song he wrote for the event. During our trip there were also some fun firsts for our students: first time being in Europe, first time being in a European cathedral, first time seeing snow, first time being in honor choir, and being part of a world premiere first performance of The Singers by Paul Ayers. We also had Sebastian who experienced his 4th year as an honor choir member. We reminisced about his past four years and he has lovely comparisons of each learning journey. Shaikha had a chance to meet Dr. Lynne Gackle, Director of Choral Activities at Baylor University, who was conducting the women’s choir. Baylor University was one of her short-listed universities to attend, and she has also been accepted there. Elsa earned a position as a trio/solo in the final movement of Ralph Vaughn William’s Dona Nobis Pacem. Not only did the students get to perform, they also had a deep learning experience being a member of the audience watching the performances of the women’s choir and the men’s choir.

Repertoire of the mixed choir included the following pieces:

Alleluia – Algridas Martinaitis
Ohisashi Buri – Stephen Hatfield
Viva La Musica! – David Brunner
Psalm 23 – Bobby McFerrin
Voices of Earth – Mark Sirett
Movement V from Dona Nobis Pacem - Ralph Vaughn Williams
The Singers (World Premiere) - Paul Ayers

We would like to recognize the efforts of Mrs. Rachel Elbin who served as  accompanist for their auditions last October, spending hours of her time helping them. In addition we thank our Athletic Director, Mr. Luther Rauk, for taking the six days to travel with us. This year was the 10th time TAISM has participated in International Honor Choir organized by AMIS. Once again, the process has been a life-changing experience for all involved.

The next musical event that we are eagerly looking forward to is the 13th Annual TAISM Festival of Choirs from March 18-19, 2016. Students from eighteen International Schools will participate in this event, which includes forty-six high school singers from TAISM. All of us in the music department are gearing up for this musical extravaganza. We hope you can attend, show your support, and be moved by their united voices.
