TAISM Hosts Mathematics Workshop for Teachers
On October 9 and 10, 2015, TAISM hosted 30 teachers from around the region for the AERO Mathematics Workshop entitled: Stimulating and Assessing Mathematical Thinking, with Erma Anderson. AERO is an acronym for American Education Reaches Out, and is a consortium sponsored by the Office of Overseas School, US State department. Project AERO provides professional development opportunities, curriculum, and standards, which are developed and aligned to best practice in US education.
During the workshop, the participants worked collaboratively to explore and develop ‘rich tasks’ in mathematics, as well as aligning assessments with rigorous cognitive expectations for mathematical thinking. Teachers in TAISM’s secondary mathematics department-grades 8-12, gained a better understanding of how these mathematical practices improve student learning.
Erma Anderson is a mathematics consultant who works with international schools around the world, training teachers in mathematics and the development of deep understanding of mathematical concepts. She is familiar to some TAISM parents for her Parent Education evenings from several years ago. While she was at TAISM she also was able to work with the Elementary staff on Sunday, October 11. We hope to have Erma Anderson return later in the year for her very popular Parent Education presentation!
