SAISA Women’s Basketball Tournament
Lloyd Baker, Coach & HS Math and Science Teacher
TAISM’s women’s basketball team arrived in Dhaka on an early morning flight, full of anticipation for the upcoming basketball tournament. We were the returning champions, but this time we were coming back to Dhaka with a team consisting of five ninth graders, two eleventh graders and one returning twelfth grade student. To say that we were a little nervous watching the Bengali dancers at the opening ceremonies would be an understatement.
Our first half of the game against American School Bombay was very close, but during the third quarter we could not keep up with their fast break and the score ended 30-15 in favor of Bombay. But we were still full of fight and quickly learned what tournament play was all about, as we bounced back with victories against Lahore and Chennai to take second place in our pool.
Our decisive game against Lincoln School was a tough battle on the court, but when the final buzzer sounded, the experience and tenacity of Lincoln wore us down and we lost by ten points. In the consolation game against Lahore, TAISM played their best basketball of the tournament as we managed to put 28 points on the scoreboard against their 21. The game for 5th and 6th place against Chennai was a defensive classic, but when the dust settled on the court TAISM came up two points short 14-12.
Overall, our team had a positive experience and represented TAISM very well with spirit and sportsmanship. They quickly learned what type of training and commitment is needed to be competitive in playing six games over three days.
Coach Fredlund and I would like thank the players for being enthusiastic and responsible traveling companions, and their parents, who came out to cheer and support us at our games this year. We look forward to working with the returning players in next year’s basketball season.
