Admission Guidelines for Students Who Are English Language Learners (ELL)

Early Childhood (EC) to Grade 6

Students who do not have English language background may be admitted to grade EC to grade 6.  Admission to the school will depend upon the student meeting admission requirements, the school’s ability to serve the student in the English Language Learners (ELL) program and space availability.  Testing of new students who may qualify for ELL services will be tested by the Elementary ELL Coordinator.

Grades 7 - 12

In grades 7-12, fluency in English is essential for students to function successfully and actively in all aspects of school life.  As part of the admissions process for ELL students, a test of reading and writing (SLEP), an interview with the student, and a review of the student’s transcripts will be completed. This process will be conducted by the Admissions Coordinator, ELL Teacher, Counselor and/or Middle/High School Principals.

The following criteria, based upon the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines, establishes guidelines for the minimum levels of English proficiency for students seeking to enter TAISM in grades 7 – 12.  New applicants must demonstrate the following levels of English language proficiency in the four skill areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to enter TAISM at the beginning of the school year or subsequent level of proficiency if seeking admission in the 2nd semester:

Grade 7 – High Beginner

Grade 8 – Intermediate – Low

Grade 9 – Intermediate – High

Grade 10 – Advanced

Grades 11 & 12 – Advanced – Plus (mainstreamed)

Admission to Grades 7-12 will depend upon the student meeting the above requirements, the school’s ability to serve the student in the English Language Learners (ELL) program and space availability.
