Secondary
Standards and Benchmarks Course Descriptions
The Secondary School Program is organized into two levels:
The program is designed to give students a rigorous and thorough grounding in the core disciplines of English, social studies, mathematics, science and world languages, as well as the opportunity to explore music, art, information technology and physical education. Academic classes are supplemented with a diverse range of co-curricular activities.
Middle School (11 to 14 years of age)
The Middle School links the Elementary School to the High School. It is during the Middle School years of education that students undergo their most intense period of physical, psychological and cognitive growth. In addition to its academic focus, TAISM’s developmentally appropriate middle school environment also addresses social, moral and ethical growth. Emphasis is placed on developing a curriculum that is interdisciplinary in nature and organized around broad themes. The goal is to create a program of study that is academically demanding, coherently connected and personally relevant.
High School (14 to 18 years of age)
The High School program is designed to promote college readiness and personal growth. Students in Grades 9 and 10 study a core sequence of courses in English, social studies, science, foreign language and mathematics (please see calculator letter), as well as electives in art, music, physical education and information technology. In Grades 11 and 12, students have a chance to focus their program and pursue areas of strength. In all of the disciplines, Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer an opportunity for accelerated study, as well as provide an annual external indicator of how TAISM students compare to other college-bound students. As with the other grades, the academic program is enriched by a number of co-curricular activities.
