NASPE/TAISM Standards & Benchmarks

Physical Education - Level IV: Grades 9-12

 

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Entering Level IV with a Physical Education background:
1. demonstrate the ability to perform basic and advanced skills and tactics to participate in at least one activity from each of three of the following categories: aquatics, dance, lifetime activities (badminton, fitness for life, yoga, bowling); individual, dual, and team sports (handball, ultimate, volleyball, lacrosse, basketball, soccer).

Entering Level IV without a Physical Education background:
2. demonstrate competency in at least one activity from two of the following categories: aquatics, dance, lifetime activities (badminton, fitness for life, yoga, bowling); individual, dual, and team sports (handball, ultimate, volleyball, lacrosse, basketball, soccer).

3. Demonstrates a variety of swimming strokes.

4. Passes a volleyball to a teammate using correct form for the forearm pass (i.e. bends knees, has steady platform, makes forearm contact, straightens legs).

5. Uses a variety of stroke placements to keep opponent moving during a badminton match.

6. Dribbles a soccer ball at moderate to fast speeds, while maintaining control of the ball, evading opponents, and shielding the ball.

7. Positions self correctly in a 2-1-2 defense during a basketball game.

8. Provides appropriate support for a teammate with the disc in an ultimate game by being in position to receive a pass.

 

2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

9. Use basic biomechanical concepts and principles to analyze and improve performance of self and others during each activity unit.

10. Utilize checklists, diagrams, photographs, and videotapes to compare and contrast personal performance in order to improve skill execution.

11. Design and implement offensive plays in each team sport.

12. Explains appropriate tactical decisions in a game (what to do when, including both on-the-ball and off-the-ball movements).

13. Understand and utilize offensive and defensive strategies appropriate to dual and team sports.

14. Choreograph and present a dance performance that utilizes the following basic elements of dance: direction, pathways, focus, balance, levels rhythm, space, force and relationships.

15. Understand and demonstrate key movement variations in dance and fitness activities: echo, mirror, and shadow.

16. Demonstrate knowledge of the rules that govern the various sports activity units.

3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

17. Willingly participates in a variety of physical activities appropriate for maintaining or enhancing a healthy, active lifestyle.

18. Accumulates a recommended number of minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity outside of physical education class on five or more days per week.

19. Demonstrates the use of appropriate strategies for effecting behavior change regarding physical activity.

20. Demonstrates the ability to monitor and adjust activity to meet personal physical activity needs.

21. Monitors physical activity through the use of a pedometer, heart-rate monitor, and/or physical activity log.

22. Accumulates a specified number of steps during the day to meet personal goals.

23. Demonstrates effective time management skills that allows opportunities for physical activity to be created or found during a busy day.

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

24. Develops and Maintains appropriate levels of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, body composition and flexibility necessary for a healthy and productive life.

25. Assesses physical fitness status in terms of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

26. Designs and implements a personal fitness program based on information obtained from the fitness assessment and in accordance with appropriate training principles.

27. Understands body composition, what affects it, and the benefits which accrue from maintaining an optimal level of body composition.

28. Accurately monitors frequency, intensity, and duration of activity behaviors related to a healthy lifestyle.

29. Understands, calculates, and uses the Target Training Zone to ensure safe and productive workouts on land and in water.

30. Understands and uses the Rate of Perceived Exertion to monitor intensity level during workouts.

5. Exhibits personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings

31. Demonstrates a high level of self-motivated involvement in class activities.

32. Participates cooperatively and ethically in all class tasks.

33. Participates successfully in a cooperative learning group with a wide range of diverse members.

34. Develops and utilizes methods of constructive feedback to improve self and peer learning.

35. Understands and demonstrates the concept of Spirit of the Game in all class activities, whether the context is competitive, recreational, or isolated skill development.

36. Shows leadership by diffusing conflict during competition.

37. Accepts and respects decisions made by officials in games.

38. Understands and practices skills which enhance teamwork.

39. Appreciates and respects the venue and equipment used while participating in physical activity.

40. Be able to ask for and accept help from members of their team.

41. Be able to offer positive and helpful comments to improve peer performance.

6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

42. Fosters positive and enjoyable interactions with others during physical activity.

43. Enjoys working with others in a sport activity to achieve a common goal.

44. Self reflects on elements which contribute to personal enjoyment.

45. Analyzes and compares health and fitness benefits derived from various physical activities.

46. Analyzes and evaluates a personal fitness program and its effectiveness in achieving total wellness.

48. Creates and performs a dance routine that expresses a self-generated list of emotions.
