NASPE/TAISM Standards & Benchmarks

Physical Education - Level II: Grades 3-5

 

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities

1. While traveling, avoid or catch an individual or object.
2. Leap, leading with either foot.
3. Throws and catches an object using mature form, (both overhand and underhand) with or without an object (i.e., hand, scoop, lacrosse stick, etc.).
4. Hand/foot dribble a ball and maintain control while traveling by self and within a group.
5. Achieves control of an object then passes to a moving receiver.
6. Develop patterns and combinations of movements into repeatable sequences.
7. Designs and refines a gymnastic, dance, or skill routine demonstrating smooth transitions.
8. Without hesitating, travel into and out of a rope turned by others.
9. Demonstrate competence in basic swimming strokes and survival skill in, on, and around the water (See TAISM Progressive Swim Guidebook).

2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

10. Strike a softly thrown, lightweight ball back to a partner using a variety of body parts, and combinations of body parts (e.g. the bump volley in volleyball, the foot in soccer, etc.).
11. Consistently strike a stationary/moving object with a bat, paddle, or racquet demonstrating an appropriate grip, side to target, and swing plane.
12. Recognize fundamental components and strategies used in simple games and activities.
13. Accurately recognizes the critical elements of a motor skill made by a fellow student and provides feedback to that student.
14. Explains the necessity of transferring weight from the back leg to the front leg during any action that propels an object forward.
15. Explains how appropriate practice improves performance.

3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

16. Regularly participate in physical activity for the purpose of improving skillful performance and physical fitness.
17. Describe healthful benefits that result from regular and appropriate participation in physical activity.
18. Describes how heart rate is used to monitor exercise intensity.
19. Maintains an activity log to document activity data.

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

20. Maintains heart rate within the target heart rate zone for a specified length of time during an aerobic activity.
21. Participates in selected activities that develop and maintain each component of physical fitness.
22. Support, lift, and control body weight in a variety of activities.

5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

23. Cooperates with all class members by taking turns and sharing equipment.
24. Works productively with a partner or in a group.
25. Accepts the teacher’s decision regarding a personal rule infraction without displaying negative reactions towards others.
26. Assess and takes responsibility for his or her own behavior problems without blaming others.
27. Respect persons from different backgrounds and with different skill abilities.
28. Regularly encourages others and refrains from put-down statements.

6.Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

29. Identify positive feelings associated with participation in physical activities.
30. Design games, gymnastics, and/or dance sequences that are personally interesting.
31. Interacts with others by helping with their physical activity challenges.
32. Celebrate personal successes and achievements and those of others.
