NASPE/TAISM Standards & Benchmarks

Physical Education - Level III: Grades 6-8

 

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

1. throw a variety of objects demonstrating both accuracy and distance (Frisbees, ball, football, etc.).
2. continuously strike a ball to a wall, or a partner, with a paddle/stick/racquet using forehand and backhand strokes.
3. hand dribble and foot dribble while preventing an opponent from stealing the ball.
4. consistently throw and catch a ball while guarded by opponents.
5. in a small group keep an object continuously in the air without catching it.
6. demonstrate proficiency in front and back swimming strokes.
7. combine skills competently to participate in modified versions of team and individual sports.
8. demonstrate the basic skills of basketball, soccer, and volleyball using mature form (i.e., volleyball serve, basketball set shot, trap).

2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

9. consistently strike a ball, using a golf club or a hockey stick, so that it travels in an intended direction and height.
10. design and perform gymnastics, dance sequences, skill routine that combine traveling, rolling, balancing, and weight transfer into smooth, flowing sequences with intentional changes in direction, speed, and flow.
11. design and play small group games that involve cooperating with others to keep an object away from opponents (basic offensive and defensive strategy).
12. leap, roll, balance, transfer weight, bat, volley, hand and foot dribble, and strike a ball with a paddle, using mature motor patterns.
13. use and analyze basic offensive and defensive strategies while playing a modified version of a sport.
14. detect, analyze, and correct errors in personal movement patterns.identify and describe principles of training and conditioning for a variety of physical activities including fitness.
15. Detects and corrects errors in personal performance based on knowledge of results.

3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

16. participate in vigorous physical activity for a sustained period of time while maintaining a target heart rate to achieve cardiorespiratory benefits.
17. recover from vigorous physical activity in an appropriate length of time.
18. correctly demonstrate various weight training techniques.
19. maintains a physical activity log documenting progress toward achievement of personal goals.

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

20. monitor heart rate before, during, and after activity.
21. correctly demonstrate activities designed to improve and maintain muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and cardiorespiratory functioning
22. improve and maintain appropriate physical fitness
23. identify proper warm-up, conditioning, and cool-down techniques and the reasons for using them
24. demonstrate appropriate training principles and exercise techniques during participation in activities designed to improve physical fitness.
25. formulate meaningful personal fitness goals based on fitness test results..

5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

26. practice in ways that are appropriate for learning new skills or sports on his/her own (i.e. makes responsible decisions about using time, applying rules, etc.).
27. accept and respect decisions made by officials and teachers, shows self-control.
28. understand and develop skills which enhance and support group work.
29. respect the equipment used while participating in physical activity.
30. recognize the role of games, sports, and dance in getting to know an understand others of like and different cultures.
