English Language Learning (ELL)

English Language Learning (ELL) services are available for all students. Instruction is provided to enhance the student’s acquisition of spoken and written English. The goal of the ELL program is to develop each student’s fluency and comprehension in English so that they can achieve success in their grade level classroom.

Admission Policy for ELL students

Elementary School and Grade 6

Students with no English Language background can be admitted to TAISM. Admission to the school will depend upon meeting admission requirements, the school’s ability to serve the student in the ELL program and space availability.

Secondary School – Grades 7 - 12

At the Secondary School level, fluency in English is essential for students to function successfully and actively in all aspects of school life. As part of the admissions process for ELL students, a test of reading and writing, an interview with the student and a review of the student’s transcripts will be completed.

The following criteria, based upon the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines, establishes guidelines for the minimum levels of English proficiency for students seeking to enter TAISM in grades 7–12. New applicants must demonstrate these levels of English language proficiency in the four skill areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to enter TAISM at the beginning of the school year or subsequent level of proficiency if seeking admission in the 2nd semester:

Grade 7 – High Beginner
Grade 8 – Intermediate – Low
Grade 9 – Intermediate – High
Grade 10 – Advanced
Grades 11& 12 - Advanced –Plus (mainstreamed)
