MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES

GRADE 6

The Social Studies program for grade six is designed to expand each student’s ability to effectively identify and demonstrate understanding of major components in world history by highlighting world cultures and world geography. This course utilizes the ancient civilizations of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East to draw a foundation for understanding the development of cultures and society. There is a strong emphasis on discovering and evaluating the ideas of commonality and diversity, conflict and cooperation, continuity and change, and individualism and interdependence.

GRADE 7

The Social Studies program for grade seven is designed to expand each student’s ability to effectively identify and demonstrate an understanding of major components in world geography by highlighting physical, climatic, and cultural features and focusing briefly on the people, their environment, and way of life. This course concentrates on continental regions to create a foundation for understanding the development of landforms, climates, and populations. There is a strong emphasis on understanding and evaluating the ideas of population density, economic resources, environmental challenges, continuity and change, and effectively utilizing maps, charts, and graphs.

GRADE 8 - US HISTORY

This chronological survey course introduces eighth grade students to the major ideas, events and personalities of American history from the pre-colonial period through the end of the Cold War. In addition, the course seeks to build and reinforce academic skills of critical reading, note taking, essay writing, and research.
