ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

MIDDLE SCHOOL ELL The English as a Second Language course is designed to build vocabulary, grammar and conversational skills. It is also a class to support the students with core subjects through listening, speaking, reading and writing. The goal of this course is for the student to achieve the English language skills needed so that he/she is able to function productively and successfully in the core curriculum.

Course Content:Listening and Speaking: Students will read aloud, converse with each other and the teacher, and work in pairs and groups.Reading: Students will read from a variety of core subject texts and develop vocabulary and grammar base through these. They will learn strategies for reading for comprehension and enjoyment. Writing: Students will learn about sentence structure, organization and word choice in writing paragraphs and essays. Editing their own work to check for mistakes will be emphasized. The class will be highly interactive and will require the full participation of all students.

Course Content:Reading: The students will be reading from a variety of sources in their core subjects and this class will support them in the development of vocabulary and grammar for the comprehension of these readings. Writing: Students will focus on basic sentence structure, grammar, organization, and word choice in writing. Peer editing and mistake analysis will be an integral part of the writing process. Editing writing assignments for core subjects will a part of the writing focus. Listening/Speaking: Students will read aloud, discuss topics from their core subject assignments, and converse with peers and teacher. Focus will be on correct pronunciation and understanding of idiomatic expressions.
