TAISM Discover Oman

Every student from Early Childhood through 12th grade will have the opportunity to explore a corner or aspect of the Sultanate of Oman that they would not normally experience within the classroom walls. TAISM’s flagship program, Discover Oman, is an experiential-based week of outdoor discovery. Students get up-close and personal with the culture, geography, and people of the wonderful country we live in.

DISCOVER OMAN PROGRAM

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The TAISM Secondary School Discover Oman program provides students with unique cultural, personal, interpersonal and environmental experiences not available on the TAISM campus. From these experiences we hope that our students will learn, reflect and grow as individuals.

Discover Oman:

  • Provides exposure to Oman with the hopes of nurturing a better understanding and appreciation of Omani culture, geography and people.
  • Strengthens acquaintances within the TAISM secondary school community among students and faculty, as well as the development of responsibilities commensurate with group living.
  • Increases respect for the environment through exposure to unique habitats, unique topographical features and the impact of human populations on the land.
  • Provides opportunities for personal reflection, self-awareness and self-reliance.

Brief outline of the Discover Oman trips

  1. Elementary School - For 2007-08, the Elementary School Discover Oman Week will be held prior to Winter Break (December 1st - 5th). During this week, elementary school students will participate in various day trips around Muscat that are organized at grade level. These outings have been planned to be developmentally appropriate for the age of the students. Furthermore, grade 5 students will have an overnight trip designed for them which will occur after Winter Holiday.
  2. Secondary School – For 2007-08, the Secondary School Discover Oman Week will be held a few weeks after students return from Winter Holiday (February 2nd through 6th). The Discover Oman Program in the secondary school is guided by a faculty developed purpose statement. Most trips in the secondary school include a substantial overnight component. However, there are differences between the middle and high school programs.
    1. The MS Discover Oman trips are organized by grade level. Furthermore, the emphasis of the program at this division will be self-awareness and working as part of a group. Each grade will be away from campus for at least 3 nights and 4 days. As students move through the grades in middle school, there is a progression in the degree of responsibility they need to take for their own well-being and comfort.
    2. The HS Dicover Oman trips are composed of students from grade levels 9th through 12th. This encourages students to take on different leadership roles and interact with people which whom they have their trip in common with. Furthermore, high school students will get to choose what trip they would like to participate in through a lottery system.
